Happy Birthday, Nelson Eddy!

maceddy Jeanette & Nelson We will remember 0 Comments

Nelson Eddy

Nelson Eddy…born June 29, 1901. We remember him today and celebrate his life. And who better to comment than  Jeanette MacDonald, his co-star in 8 films and in life. She  said: “I always thought him better looking in person than on the screen,” and added:

“No other man on the screen gives such an impression of eagerness and sincerity as Nelson Eddy. He is unique in this respect. It is this boy-like quality which appeals most to women — the quality of unsophisticated eagerness in a mature and attractive man. He is exactly the same on the screen as he is off…anxious to please…the least theatrical artist I’ve ever known. There’s not an ounce of affectation in him. He was destined for stardom from the beginning.”

Happy Birthday, Nelson!

“Sweethearts” reader review…”book isn’t long enough!”

maceddy Jeanette & Nelson Mail Bag 0 Comments

From Harriet Baker:

If I fall asleep at work today you are getting the blame.  I curled up in bed at 9:15 and read until 12:25!!!   I read the Tahoe letter 3 times and yes I had kleenex at my side.  I cried at the first page with the quotes from Irene Dunne, etc.  Lady, you are a great writer!!!   You are such an easy writer to read.

If I have one complaint, it’s that this book isn’t long enough.  I have read Sweethearts 1,565,998 times and I knew immediately what sentences were new.  Keep going Sharon.  Please keep going.

Today in J/N History

1938 Hollywood Reporter notes that this week "Squabbles from Jeanette and Nelson cost Woody Van Dyke 5 days of production" on "Sweethearts." We don't know which event caused the production shutdown, possibly it was when Gene Raymond hit Jeanette and badly bruised her face (according to Ruth Van Dyke Jeanette had a terrible black eye); Nelson retaliated by hitting Gene and sending him to the hospital.
