This is assuredly a sad day to remember, reminding me what Gale Sherwood said upon leaving the hospital after Nelson’s death… her comment after seeing two doves flying away together…
“we will always remember” americans greatest baritone- taken too soon but passing as he wished which is a gift i think! though even today we are happy to see his boyish charm and hear his golden voice- im sure he is singing with the angels and also with his special angel!
thanks you nelson for the joy you give us

I was very young when Nelson passed but I do remember reading it in the paper and how sad my Mom was when I told her. She loved Jeanette and Nelson and followed them since she was a teenager. When she told me they were married to others, I was so surprised, then she paused, and added, but those in the know say they were very “involved”. Hmm, didn’t think much of it until I learned the truth this past year and met some amazing people in the process. What a story, what a couple, they have enriched my life and I am very thankful for the gift of Nelson Eddy and his beloved Jeanette.
Angela, it’s amazing to me how what you posted is exactly what happened with me and my mother, practically word for word! How I thought they were married and my mom told me they married others, how upset I was and then my mother saying but most of their fans thought they were in love with one another! Etc.!!! I don’t really recall when Nelson died, too young I guess or too clueless… I think I vaguely recall hearing about it and feeling sad for my mom. After all, she used to sing “Italian Street Song” all the time, had all those 78 Nelson records, we watched the MacEddy films when they showed up on Channel 9 movies together. so it must have been very sad for her. And now, I’ve taken up the banner!!! Thank you Nelson Eddy for sharing your magnificent voice with us! I hope you are at peace with your Jenny.
I was 13 years old in 1960 when I saw my first MacEddy film on the late show. It was a warm, mellow summer evening, and the film was Naughty Marietta. I had never seen anything so beautiful in my life, and to this day there is a special place in my heart where I keep them. When I entered high school, my family encouraged me to start studying voice and opera, and with every vocalise that I practiced or new song that I learned, in the back of my mind I was always thinking of Jeanette, and how she may have sung it to Nelson. We’ve all been enriched by their special gifts, and most of us have seen and felt the love that they had for each other. It’s quite unmistakable. Thanks Sharon for all the work you’ve done to preserve their memories.
I wasn’t born when Nelson Eddy died, I came a year and 5 months later, but becoming a fan later in my life through my dear mother & grandmother I have always remembered this sad date. I did think of Nelson when I arose this morning. Jeanette & Nelson were loved so by us. It is such an honor to be a member of this club.. one that honors BOTH equally as it should be. God bless them and everyone who contributes!
I first saw Nelson in the last ten minutes of ‘Girl of the Golden West’when it was shown on TV. After, when iit was announced that ‘New Moon’ would be shown the following week, I made sure I saw it all. I fell in love with the teaming of Nelson and Jeanette, and today ‘New Moon’ remains my favourite of their joint movies. I guessed even then that they were in love and then, many years later came Sharon’s book to verify my thoughts…Thank you for that, Sharon. How this beautiful duo have enhanced my life…and how many true friends I have found through them. May their twin flames ever burn.

Like everyone else, I was introduced to Jeanette & Nelson by my Gramma. I later introduced her to the Beatles. We each loved the others choice. As much as I love these two, I love Jeanette more and find her to be the victim in this sad love story. It is her that I cry more for. I shudder to think how she would have handled it if Nelson passed away first. I believe everything Sharon has written and shame on those that do not. My heart breaks everytime I read Sweethearts or listen to their voices.
I grew up seeing and hearing the movies and music of Nelson Eddy and Jeannette McDonald in the home of my grandparents in the 1950’s as a young boy, in Los Angeles. I didn’t know at the time these films were made in the late 1930’s and 40’s. I always remembered them as magical hours spent listening to them sing in great costumes. Once I had my own family I introduced Nelson and Jeannette to my daughters. My youngest daughter became enchanted with them as well and when we had an opportunity to go back to Los Angeles on vacation my daughter found where Nelson was buried and asked if I would take her to see his grave. When we found the cemetery and the grave site my daughter placed her IPod on the headstone and turned it on so we could hear Nelson sing “Will You Remember”. It seemed fitting to be there on that day to pay our respects and appreciation for a man who left so much Joy through his music for generations to come. My daughter was 21 years old and first heard him when she was 9. About the same age I was when I first heard him sing. This was an experience we will always remember for both of us, Father and daughter.
I was born the year Nelson married “that” woman. Unfortunately I knew nothing about them until 1966 when I was in Sydney. Naughty Marietta was on television and I was gobsmacked. His voice was amazing, plus he had one or two other attributes in abundance. I have always liked opera, and I thought she was a perfect opera star. Nelson was appearing at the Hilton in Sydney in 1967 and I persuaded my husband to go. We both loved the show, and he said let’s come back tomorrow night. We sat at a table so close we were almost on the stage. We didn’t make it the following night, which was devastating because a few months later I heard the terrible news. Since then I have bought all their films and am currently reading Sharon’s book. What a story! I can’t put it down.
I know I’m late in logging in to post, but I felt I had to. Sharon, you have done such a wonderful thing – finally putting in print the truth I always knew – the love between Jeanette and Nelson all their lives. Of course, I always knew it anyway…how could anyone not? But I feel so badly that they did not marry; when I was young and watched them together in films, I said ‘they must be married’, and was aghast on finding out they were not. It just didn’t make sense…they always looked so much in love. The torment they must have felt not to be together. And both died much too young.
Beautiful baritone voice and beautiful soprano voice – never was there such a team. Well, they are together now, but how I wish they were together on this side too. Their story makes me so sad.
