I want to thank everyone who came to our NYC meeting. We had a lot of fun, enjoyed two great Jeanette/Nelson birthday cakes (thanks, Maria!) and folks got to meet one of my “Sweethearts” sources. In particular, Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker and producer Dick Barclay was working with Robert Mitchum years ago and they discussed the Jeanette/Nelson story and whether Mitchum knew anything about it. To Dick’s surprise, Mitchum said he could actually verify one point of the story; in particular the fact that just before Christmas, 1964, Jeanette was in the hospital and needed Gene at her side before undergoing major surgery; Nelson was there but could not sign needed paperwork since he was not legally her spouse. “It’s true that Nelson Eddy was going in and out of bars [on Santa Monica Blvd] looking for Gene Raymond,” Mitchum told Dick Barclay. “I was in one of the bars when he came in searching for him.” The moral of this story: you never know who you might meet at one our Mac/Eddy club events. Even I learn new information! – Sharon
