Jeanette MacDonald & Nelson Eddy 2009 Cruise Update – Wanna design a tote bag logo for us?

maceddy Jeanette & Nelson cruise

It’s now less than a month until our wonderful Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy Valentines Week Cruise! We are kicking into high gear here, getting ready!

If you are interested in joining us, it’s not too late! We just had a couple from Australia book this last week.

For details and current room rates and discounts, please call Hallie Neill at 212-874-1670 or email her at highctravel@yahoo.com.

Even if you can’t attend, you might want to help on an important project! Next week I will be ordering the “goody packages” for everyone who does join us on the cruise. What I need is – a cruise logo picture! If you are a graphic designer or have a friend/relative who is one – you can help us!

We need a graphic that is about 8×10″ (can be vertical or horizontal) that includes a high-quality photo (or photos) of Jeanette and Nelson, possibly a medley of photos and a ship – or whatever – and says “Mac/Eddy Cruise 2009” on it. The artwork should be saved at 300 dpi (dots per inch) and saved as a “png” photo file. If someone needs a 300 dpi scan of a particular photo, they can contact me by email at maceddyclub@aol.com so I can send one. Otherwise, the graphic designer can scan his/her own glossy photo of them to use – again – it must be scanned at 300 dpi. This is a volunteer project, but the designer can “sign” the design with his/her name and website address in small type, if desired.

We will give everyone until Monday, January 19, 5 pm Eastern to submit their artwork. At that time the graphic designer should email me a lower resolution jpg photo of their project that I can email to everyone…and I will then send out a newsletter that evening and let you vote on which one you like the most. I will then inform the winner who can then email me the 300 dpi final graphic.

This is exciting…let’s see what we can come up with!

PS: If you are coming on the cruise and want me to bring you any specific books, calendars, CDs, DVDs or anything else – please email me now and let me exactly what you want so that I’m sure to bring it.

Kaye Ballard on Nelson Eddy…

maceddy Jeanette & Nelson Nelson Eddy

Kaye Ballard

In case you wondered what Kaye Ballard said about Nelson Eddy in her autobiography. She mentioned him once in the book:

By the way, I have recorded several albums in my life (including a version of Oklahoma! with Nelson Eddy, in which I sang the role of Ado Annie, that sold millions of copies) and never made a penny on any of them.

Nelson Eddy “Phantom of the Opera” review from The New York Times

maceddy Jeanette & Nelson phantom of the opera 0 Comments

Nelson Eddy in

The New York Times has reprinted their 1943 movie review of “The Phantom of the Opera,” which starred Nelson Eddy, Susanna Foster and Claude Rains as The Phantom.

Perhaps there is renewed interest in all things Phantom since Andrew Lloyd Webber recently announced he’d written a sequel to his Phantom musical.

The review of Nelson’s film, which was originally published on October 15, 1943, seems to sum up correctly the weaknesses of this film. True, Nelson sang wonderfully in the film …but that black wig was dreadful. The movie’s main failing seemed to be that it couldn’t decide whether it was a Nelson Eddy film or a horror movie. It didn’t fully succeed either way, and Nelson Eddy obviously felt it didn’t work for him as he left Universal Studios without filming the second picture he’d hoped to make at that studio.

The review reprint also has a color trailer that you can watch!

The fact that the name of Nelson Eddy appears at the head of the cast of Universal’s “The Phantom of the Opera,” which came to the Capital yesterday, is not to be taken as evidence that Mr. Eddy has finally found his role. He is no phantom in this one; he is very much in solid evidence, and his lungs are working as strongly and as loudly as they have ever worked before. Indeed, you might almost think the picture was made just so he might sing. And that is the principal reason why this remake of the old Lon Chaney film is bereft of much of the terror and macabre quality of the original.
