Description

This photo-filled magazine rounds out our 40th anniversary tributes including celebrating Maytime‘s 80th anniversary; a hard-hitting, timely look at Hollywood’s moguls then and now including Shirley Temple’s statement re: her casting couch experience at MGM; a comprehensive article by Darryl Winston; a study of newly received paintings by Nelson done in his “blue” period of 1951-2 as well as his other busts, drawings, doodles and torsos of Jeanette; an extensive eyewitness write-up of Jeanette’s live 1944 operas…and finally, early diary entries of Jeanette’s mother, Anna MacDonald, which shed some light on both her character and personal events going on in her daughter’s life.

Today in J/N History

1940 Nelson sings in Philadelphia despite being ill. He is falling apart on this tour, physically and emotionally, particularly since Ann is with him for this leg of it. Critics find his hoarse voice "below par" and though he tries to struggle through the rest of it, he eventually collapses and is transported back to an LA hospital by his mother and a nurse.
