Description

The famous “Rose-Marie” tree, still standing 90 years later!

UPDATED October 24, 2025! This page will be updated as plans are finalized!

NOTE: The dates of our trip have been finalized to Monday, June 8, 2026 through Saturday, June 13! This saves us hundreds of dollars each on our hotel rooms!

Next year, 2026, is the 90th anniversary of the movie Rose Marie. We have finalized our dates for our Lake Tahoe trip, to visit the various locations where the film was shot. This will include 5 nights in a hotel (the location to follow as we finalize plans). Our tour guides will be the ladies who have visited a few times and are familiar with all the filming locations. Those who choose can also climb up to Alpine Meadows and see where Jeanette and Nelson filmed “Indian Love Call.” And yes, the famous tree is still standing. Our dates are June 8 through June 13, as this week features the best hotel rates and a less busy time at Tahoe. Details will be updated here in the next few days.

We are looking into group accommodations, so you will have to pay for a 5-night hotel stay. Not sure whether there will be an event meeting charge, as we plan to screen “Rose Marie” and have other group activities besides sightseeing. Some will want to rent a car, and we will sort out carpooling for sightseeing. Those who need an airport transport from the Reno airport to the hotel, the fee is about $36 this year, one way. We may need to rent a meeting room for this, and possibly have some guest speakers. Right now, if you are interested joining us and want more information, please “purchase” this item for no charge. That way we can get an idea of your interest and also keep you posted on updated plans.

Would you please write in the “order notes” when checking out, if you would plan to come alone, or how many people would you likely bring? Would you be flying in or driving? Also, any questions or suggestions, please add to the order notes.

May we also recommend that you are not signed up for our private Facebook group, please do so, as we are setting up an Event page there and will survey dates, activities, etc, with those in the group, so we can finalize this wonderful event! Here’s the link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/maceddyclub

This event will replace our normal Los Angeles meeting late in June.

Thank you, and we’ll be calling you-oo-oo-oo as our plans firm up!

Sharon

UPDATE: Below is our planned sightseeing itinerary. The order of what’s done each day may change, based on that day’s weather.

FULL DAY:
Drive past Emerald Bay and stop at Overlook of Bay to take pics etc.
Camp Richardson/Ice Cream Shop (we are sure Jeanette and Nelson had ice cream there! Jeanette and Nelson visited this place privately together, although not in movie
Zephyr Cove – Where “Rose Marie” song was sung in the canoe
Boat ride on Ms. Dixie which takes you out on lake and into Emerald Bay
(about 30 minutes to these places)
FULL DAY:
Drive to Log Lodge – some retakes of Nelson arresting John Flower were filmed there – It is privately owned
Chambers Landing – where Jeanette and Nelson had cabins – The cabins are gone but you can walk on the beach where they once stood. The dock with the bar where the crew would play pool and have drinks is there. This is where Jeanette and Nelson went dancing and publicly “came out” as a couple to the film crew, which is why so many of them knew they were secretly engaged, albeit for a short time only.
Tahoe City – Visit Gatekeepers Museum where we’re coordinating with them to have their Rose Marie display.
Carnelian Bay – where Jeanette landed in the boat with Boniface. The village is not there as it was built by MGM for the movie. It is a beach now with a restaurant there
(about 1 hour 30 minutes to Carnelian Bay on North Lake Tahoe)
FULL DAY:
Truckee – See train museum. All movie supplies sent here. The theater where they watched movie rushes is now a store that you can go into.
If time could possibly drive to Donnor Pass and Donnor Lake where there is a statute and museum about the Donnor Party
(about 1 hour 30 minutes to Truckee)
FULL DAY-HIKERS
Five Lakes Trail – about a mile up hill to tree/rock. Weather permitting it is best to hike toward end of stay so most of us can acclimate to higher elevation
Emerald Bay – the totem pole scenes filmed at the point. The beans and bacon scene filmed along the bay also – It is a mile hike down to bay and a hike to the point. The mile hike back up hill is very strenuous
Vikingsholm Castle is on the bay and for a fee you can tour it. It was there when the movie was filmed but not part of movie.
(about 1 hour to Trail)
FOR NON-HIKERS
There are hubs of outdoor, pedestrian-friendly shopping “villages,” some in walking distance from the hotel. There are casinos across the Nevada border, a couple miles away.
EXTRA
Half Day – Hike Cascade Falls – the scene where Jeanette falls of horse into lake was filmed at this private lake, however you can hike up to the falls.
DAY OR EVENING TO BE DETERMINED:
A club event with a screening of “Rose Marie,” open to the public.

Today in J/N History

1933 Nelson years later recalls a conversation he had with Clark Gable around this time, telling Gable that some day he wanted a wife and children and that he was tired of the "empty-heads"  he found in Hollywood.
