1933 Newspaper reports state Nelson has reported threatening phone calls, that "something tragic would happen to him in the near future." The Los Angeles District Attorney assigned Nelson bodyguards just in case, as one paper noted that Nelson's mother, Isabel, was very concerned. This was the first instance of "threatening phone calls" Nelson would receive over the years.
