Description

VOLUME 9: (Issues 34-37) covers the complete story behind MGM’s first Technicolor film, the “lost” MAYTIME, and why it was only 3/4 completed. If you want to learn all about the first MAYTIME, this is the book for you! Three of the magazines are devoted to this film, with dozens of photos and the complete plot of the original screenplay! Includes rare candids, scenes and wardrobe shots, showing Nelson “aging” from a teen through old age. Most rare: the second act of “Tosca” with Jeanette as Tosca and Nelson as Scarpia. Several shots are shown from this scene, including Jeanette “stabbing” Nelson to death! Additional features include discussion of the early 1950s; their careers and personal crises; a startling interview with Herbert Gahagan, set designer on THE GUARDSMAN (Jeanette, Gene Raymond, 1950); photo feature: LET’S GO NATIVE (Jeanette, Jack Oakie, Kay Francis, 1930); interview with Rise Stevens. New introduction by Sharon Rich. 200 pages, color covers are reproduced full-sized inside the book.

Today in J/N History

1939 Three days after his marriage to Ann Franklin, Nelson does his normal "Chase & Sanborn" radio show. But it is awkward, the attempt to congratulate him by ushering him to the microphone with wedding music falls flat, Nelson is aloof and businesslike in the banter and the subject is quickly dropped. Singing "Little Grey Home in the West" (promoting "Sweethearts" which was still in movie theaters) must have been painful for him; the song is introduced without mentioning Jeanette's name or the film's name...and Nelson sings it like a funeral dirge.
